Languages L:S

Zion’s Language Learning Story

Speak the language, learn the language and  understand the language

Languages at Corinna School is a cool way to speak the language and understand the language, so at 2:00 we have Samoan languages.
We have to do a prayer and it starts off with:
Faatasi mai oe le Atua.
O le amata le aoga.
Foai mai le poto i o matou mafaufau,
puipui mai, ona o lou suafa,
Amene.

After we do our prayer we greet each other and our Samoan teacher Sia. So we have to do an activity which includes reading and when I read I feel proud of who I am and how I can speak my language, I can teach others that want to speak Samoan. I learned to speak Samoan by my mum and dad doing conversations and to me, that is a special gift. I learn my language in a small period of time at the age of 7.

How do we become confident speakers of our own special languages?
Success Criteria:
Practice by ourselves or in a group
Practice with our parents or family members
Speak it at home
Talk to our friends
Speak loudly so people can hear
Take opportunities even if it’s hard eg being a speaker for the school
Take a risk to speak
Find out more about our culture by communicating with others
Listen and learn from experts
Read language books and other books eg The Bible
Learn what words mean so you know what you are saying
Learn through songs
Being respectful when we are learning.

In languages, I am good at speaking Samoan at home so I know words so I understand and can talk fluently

I need to work on learning what words mean so I know what I am saying to people.

I found it hard to practice with my parents or family members because they are busy all the time.

Jae’s Feedback
You are good at speaking Samoan because you always help me with my work. You need to work on not talking over people because when zion talk’s over people we can’t hear what the other person says.
